The mahamaham tank has 20 wells which are named after 20 holy rivers flowing across India. These wells are also called as “Theertham” (Holy water). There are 20 theerthams(wells) in the tank & bathing in the waters of each theertham rids of a specific sin & bestows a specific blessing.
There are 16 Mandapas ( Gopuram Towers) around the corners and sides of the tank. These towers are considered to be forms of lord Shiva ( Sodasa Lingam)
It is believed that the waters of the nine Sacred Rivers, Ganga, Yamuna, Sarayu, Saraswathi, Narmada,Tungabadra, Krishna, and Godavari came to Mahamaham in the form of Navakanyas, took holy bath and settled here to the sacredness.
By having a holy dip in Varanasi, one can be relieved of all sins committed in holy place sand whereas sins committed in Varanasi can be washed off by a holy dip in Mahamaham Tank. Sins committed in Kumbakonam can be washed off in Kumbakonam itself by a holy dip in Mahamaham Tank.
